Babergh District Council commissioned MB Trees (East Anglia) Ltd to conduct a PiCUS testing in Hadleigh, on a mature Crack Willow tree. The tree, located at the boundary of a small meadow, is a prominent and substantial specimen standing at 27 metres with a crown spread of 24 metres. The PiCUS test was requested following the failure of a large limb at the base of the tree, which raised concerns about the tree’s structural integrity and the extent of internal decay.

The Issue
The failed limb, which was of equal size to the remaining stems, showed clear signs of decay at the base. Given the size of the tree and its proximity to essential infrastructure—specifically, overhanging electric utility cables that serve a large portion of the town—there was an urgent and significant risk of further limb failure. The site, while not directly accessible via a footpath, remains open to the public, making safety a priority.

The PiCUS Test
A comprehensive PiCUS tomography test was conducted at 50cm above ground level to assess the internal condition of the tree. Due to the failed limb’s position, this was the lowest possible measuring point. The test used 24 measuring points around the trunk to provide a detailed and thorough scan of the tree’s internal structure.
The results indicated that 60% of the tree is hollow, with significant decay. The remaining solid wood measured only 16% of the tree’s volume, with the barrier wall compromised on both the north and south sides. Additionally, swelling and included bark were noted above the test point, raising concerns about the stability of co-dominant stems.


Recommendations and Actions
Based on the PiCUS results, it was determined that immediate action was required to mitigate the risk posed by the tree. MB Trees recommended a heavy reduction and pollarding of the tree to a height of 5 metres, leaving the remaining structure as a habitat tree. This approach would significantly reduce the weight and risk of failure while also maintaining the ecological benefits of the tree. Regular maintenance, including pruning every two years, was advised to ensure safety.
