Case Study: PiCUS Testing of Lime Tree

Overview

MB Trees (East Anglia) Ltd conducted a PiCUS test on a mature Lime tree located on Melford Road, Stowmarket, commissioned by Babergh District Council. The purpose of the test was to assess the extent of decay present in the tree’s main stem and determine its structural integrity.

Tree and Site Characteristics

  • Species: Lime
  • Height: Approximately 20 metres
  • Crown Spread: 8 metres
  • Circumference (at 1.3m): 238 cm
  • Neighbourhood Features: The tree is part of a group of five similar trees situated adjacent to a road, footpath, and bus shelter. This specific tree exhibited more lean than its neighbours, raising concerns about public safety.

Condition Assessment

  • The tree exhibited a large cavity at its base on the north-facing side, likely due to previous mechanical damage. Supporting columns of reactive growth were present on either side of the cavity.
  • Using a sounding hammer, signs of decay were detected in the right-hand column of growth.
  • Dead limbs ranging from 4 to 5 inches in diameter were observed throughout the tree.

PiCUS Testing Details

  • Test Level: 20 cm above ground, at the cavity’s widest point.
  • Findings:
    • Decay was minimal beyond what was visible during the visual assessment.
    • Some decay was present in the columnar growth to the right of the cavity, indicating compromised structural integrity but retaining some strength.

Recommendations

  1. Tree Management:
    • Reduce the tree back to its previous reduction points as a minimum.
    • Consider further reduction to mitigate the risk of failure, especially given the lean and proximity to public infrastructure.
    • Monitor regrowth following reduction to prevent overloading of weakened areas.
  2. Future Testing:
    • Conduct a follow-up PiCUS test in two years to track the progression of decay.
  3. Legal Considerations:
    • Ensure compliance with tree preservation orders or conservation area regulations by consulting the local authority before carrying out pruning works.

The PiCUS testing provided critical insights into the Lime tree’s structural condition, confirming areas of decay and enabling evidence-based recommendations for its management. These measures will help ensure public safety while maintaining the health and longevity of the tree.
