Case Study: PiCUS Testing for a Horse Chestnut Tree at Eye Castle

Project Overview

In May 2023, a PiCUS test was conducted on a mature Horse Chestnut tree located within the grounds of Eye Castle. This historic location is frequented by the public, with the tree providing essential shade and aesthetic value. The test was commissioned by Babergh District Council to assess the extent of decay in the tree’s main stem and root system.

Initial Observations

The Horse Chestnut appeared healthy at first glance, but closer inspection revealed areas of concern:

  • Visual signs of Phytophthora infection, a common pathogen in Horse Chestnut trees, known to cause decay.
  • Audible indications of decay during a preliminary sounding hammer test.

The PiCUS Testing Process

Two tomographic scans were performed:

  1. At 70cm Height: Revealed no significant decay in the main stem.
  2. At Ground Level: Detected a small pocket of decay in the north side of one of the buttress roots.

The PiCUS device provided a detailed 2D visualisation of internal decay levels, confirming the tree’s structural integrity despite minor decay.

Analysis and Recommendations

Although no significant decay was found, the presence of Phytophthora and the potential for root involvement necessitated further action:

  1. Pruning Cycles: Regular reduction every two years to maintain size and minimise stress.
  2. Follow-Up Testing: Another PiCUS test before the next pruning cycle to reassess safety and determine any progression of decay.
  3. Seasonal Monitoring: A summer site visit to observe the tree’s condition later in the growing season.

Additional Considerations

  • The tree is subject to local statutory protections. Any pruning or management must comply with regulations, requiring consultation with the local authority.
  • As living organisms, trees are subject to changes over time; regular inspections are essential for long-term safety.

The PiCUS test demonstrated its value as a non-invasive diagnostic tool, providing data-driven insights for effective tree management. The proactive approach ensured the tree could continue to be a vital part of the Eye Castle landscape while addressing public safety concerns.
